What a Canadian invoice should include

In Canada you charge GST (5%) or, in HST provinces, a combined HST (13–15%) — plus PST/QST in a few provinces. If you’re registered, show your GST/HST number and put the right rate in the Tax % field so it’s itemized. Include your business name and address, the client’s, an invoice number, the date, and your payment terms.

For the universal essentials, see the full invoice checklist, or read how to invoice a client end to end.

Frequently asked questions

When do I need to charge GST/HST?

Once you’re registered — generally required after $30,000 in revenue over four quarters, optional below that. If registered, include your GST/HST number and apply your province’s rate in the Tax % field.

HST or GST + PST?

It depends on the province. HST provinces (e.g. Ontario, the Atlantic provinces) use a single combined rate; others charge 5% federal GST and a separate provincial tax. Enter the combined rate you’re collecting in the Tax % field.
